"Aspects of Worship"

"The Heart of Worship" | (more teachings)

The following devotion was submitted by "Cindy", a music minister in a United Methodist Church in IL ... it ministered to me in a profound way. It is regarding the lyrics to the popular worship chorus, "The Heart of Worship" by Matt Redman. The overall theme of this chorus is that "worship" is all about Jesus ... not our music, our sound, our style, our instruments, or what "WE" want to "get out of it". The chorus says:

"I'm coming back to the heart of worship 'cause it's all about You ... it's all about You, Jesus ... I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it ... it's all about You ...) I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. (Fred McKinnon)

This week I've been haunted by Matt Redman's words:  "I'm coming back to the
heart of worship, And it's all about You, Jesus.  I'm sorry, Lord, for the
thing I've made it . . ."

And I AM sorry!  I'm sorry for every time I've cared more about a clean
cutoff than a clean heart; I'm sorry for being more concerned about the diction of
my loftmates than the division between them.  I'm sorry for counting the rests
more carefully than I've counted my blessings or for counting my talent as
meaning ANYTHING when considered in light of His holiness and what he was
willing to sacrifice for me while I was still conceited enough to think I was the
center of the universe.  I'm sorry that I have loved the praise of men more than
the praise of God.

So I find myself contemplating:  what is worship at its heart?  (Heart
meaning "the vital or essential part; core, reduced to the most fundamental
elements")  What is it that God craves from us that he does not already have in spades
from all the heavenly beings who praise him perfectly?  To even begin to
contemplate this is to be humbled.  "What is man that you are mindful of him?"

Respectfully yours
